Dragonfly Flowers on McPhillips has been an online Winnipeg florist for over 4 years. Through that time, we have had many successes and failures with regards to websites, hosting, eCommerce and Pay Per Click advertising.
While I won’t go into too many details of those successes and failures, it is definitely of note that I truly do believe that you can learn more from your failures than from your successes. One of the main things that we have learned is the absolute importance of the internet to florists in the new millennium.
So we have decided that it’s time to have our own website to promote Dragonfly Flowers on McPhillips….again
We have really come full circle in regards to our website. Back in 2003 when we opened our little Winnipeg Flowershop, (on a shoestring budget) I decided that the best way to get online was to build a website from scratch. At that time I was working full time, around 60 hours a week, and addressing Webmaster issues for the store in the evenings and on weekends. After a series of tries, we finally had registered the domain name through a friend’s IT company, built a website from scratch, and completed phase one or our web page journey in about 6 months.
To say the least, the website was awful, didn’t have any eCommerce solution, and probably wasn’t really driving any internet traffic to our store. The idea was that we would start simple and gradually get to the point where we would have a full eCommerce website that would become the best way to find a Winnipeg Florist.
As we began to mature with our online presence and research into ordering flowers online, we learned that there are several ways to be online and generate business without taking the time to become an expert in HTML and website development.
So begins a long relationship with FlowershopNetwork.com
About 3 years ago, we came across a local florist website provided called Flowershop Network. With a few emails, phone calls and a couple of mouse clicks, www.dragonflyflowers.com was redirected to www.dragonflyflowers.net . We now had a full eCommerce website with great product availability that matches our product availability and ordering patterns very well. We will continue to use the Flowershop Network for years to come for our online eCommerce solution. The original DragonflyFlowers.com has now been archived on our computer at home and will remain there until it gets deleted or sent for recycling. I often look back on it to see how far we have come in such a short time.
The Florist Blog and Search Engine Optimization: Helping you find us!
You may notice that there is a 3 year gap between when we forwarded www.dragonflyflowers.com to www.dragonflyflowers.net and today. What were we doing during this time? Buffie was spending most of that time growing her business to what is today. Winnipeg’s Fastest Growing Florist; Possibly Winnipeg’s ONLY growing florist. I was spending most of that time learning about Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and Pay Per Click advertising (PPC). Why are these things important to you, the consumer? If we don’t do these things, then you can’t find us! So, this is one of the reasons why we started The Florist Blog. Having a blog relevant to your products is a great way to generate hits for your website and an excellent way for search engines like Google and Yahoo to find your site and rank it higher for the terms you want, like, Winnipeg Florist, Winnipeg Flowers and Buy Winnipeg Flowers Online. The benefit to you and others is that we can post information about just about anything you like regarding flowers, florists, Winnipeg, ordering flowers online or as you may have seen in a request from the comments below, “How to know if you are being screwed by your online florist”! (I’ll get on that one next week)
The New DragonflyFlowers.com went live on Saturday
I decided that it was best to get something up right away and spend the next couple of months updating the content and adding information. (Search Engines can take months to find new content) I will continue to blog about he changes that are coming to the website. Some of the new things we will be adding to the site are Customer Testimonials and Wedding Flowers. As the summer comes to an end our Wedding page will be updated with our most recent Summer 2008 creations and I will be looking at creating some special pages in the very near future.
Please check out the site and let us know what you think. You can still always find our FlowershopNetwork.com page at www.dragonflyflowers.net for ordering flowers online.
I look forward to working on the web site and developing it over the next several months as Dragonfly Flowers on McPhillips continues to grow both in Winnipeg and online.
Update: Things sure do change quickly! All of our web properties are now consolidated at http://www.dragonflyflowers.com
